Walking A Dog When You Don't Own One

Always wanted a dog but the parents always said no?

Well we almost got a puppy,by the owners decided suddenly that they would keep it after all and we got a kitten instead but a part of me wasn't satisfied. So when our next door neighbours moved in with a newborn and a dog, I plucked up the courage to ask if I could walk her, and it turned into a weekly experience.

Walking with a dog means you're getting fresh air, exercise and I found it to be quite therapeutic. I always felt relaxed and healthy after a walk with Daisy. It can be scary when other dogs try and attack, but if you keep your wits about you, the pleasurable experiences outweigh the risk. But for those of us who don't have one, what can we do?

Well you can ask your parents but having a dog is a lot of responsibility and money. If they said yes, maybe try and rescue one, and give it a second chance. If you're old enough that you don't need your parents permission, bash on! Just remember that dogs are time consuming and they need a lot of attention, and if you can't give that, then it's not fair.

If none of that works, ask around. You might have family or friends who would be happy to lend you their dog for a walk. If not, maybe that little old lady down the street owns a dog she cant really walk. There's no harm in asking people that you're friendly with, but remember and practice stranger danger!

Look on gumtree if this all fails, but remember to practice stranger danger. People put up posts everyday looking for someone to walk a dog. If you did this, try and get comfortable with the owners and then the dog before walking with it.

There are also many dog walking websites available where you can borrow someone's dog. Borrow My Doggy  is a website where you sign up and look at dogs available in your local area. You can schedule meet and greets and meet new people and dogs in the process! Again, I must advise stranger danger.

If you do manage to find a dog to walk you should remember to carry:

- A lot of dog poo bags!

- Water for both you and the dog

- Some dog treats

- A ball

- An empty bowl/plastic tub for the dog to drink out of

- And a lot of caution. Be aware of how your dog reacts to other dogs, children and traffic and be prepared for all of it. Always be cautious of your surroundings before you let a dog of it's leash. Watch out for traffic, roads, other dogs, broken glass and any other dangers.

When meeting people online, please bring someone you trust, have a fully charged mobile, meet in a public place and tell many people where you are.

  1. Great tips! I assume by some of your spellings that you are in Europe; too bad as I would love to hire you to walk our two little doggies! Some days when my husband is at work and I'm alone with my two daughters I can't give them a good, long walk. It would be nice to have someone come by and give them more exercise. I bet they'd bark less! :)

  2. Some cute ideas for those who don't have a dog. We love our walks but it would be awesome if someone offered to walk my dog occasionally on the days when I get crazy busy :)
